Land capital Mainz is located directly on the Rhine, the gateway to Rhine-Hesse, the Rheingau and the Middle Rhine Valley. Known for Gutenberg and the art of printing, the ZDF television broadcaster and the German carnival. But it is also known for its cosmopolitan flair, tolerance and joie de vivre. History

Roman settlement, archbishopric, electors' seat, University city, Mainz Republic, imperial fortress, capital city of the Land of Rhineland Palatinate – these are some of the milestones in the rich history of a lively city, and a few examples of the flair of this metropolis on the Rhine. Whether it be the Market Square, the Old Town, the Southern Train Station or the Citadel – Mainz is worth a trip back in time, even architecturally!
